In this episode of Waking Up With Melissa Ruiz, I sit down with the amazing Haley Hoffman Smith. She’s passionate about helping women make subconscious breakthroughs by unraveling and discovering core memories, limiting beliefs, and “stories” that might be keeping them stuck. These are identified and released via EFT tapping, visualizations, and a few other powerful mind techniques through 1:1 coaching and Slingshot Sessions. Haley was recently named by Forbes as one of today’s most influential female speakers. She is the author of Her Big Idea, a book on creativity, ideation, and women’s empowerment which debuted as a Top 3 Bestseller in Women & Business. She is also the founder of the Her Big Idea Fund in partnership with Brown University’s Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship, which awards grants to women who apply with BIG ideas.

How did you get started on your journey?
Haley: Since I was young, I always wanted to be a talk show host or to act or sing. Life pulled me away from that in a lot of ways. When I graduated from college, I joined a startup because I was also always entrepreneurial. But I still yearned to perform. In fact, I booked a motivational speaking tour after releasing my first book called Her Big Idea. I loved it so much that I quit the startup, but it let me get stuck in a rut for a while. I was a self-sabotaging mess who procrastinated constantly. During that time, I was led to EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) tapping, which I successfully went through before to rid myself of anxiety and my fear of flying. That time, I wanted to break through the procrastination. After just one session, I was completely healed. I discovered the root cause of my procrastination, which was this deep fear of other people’s opinions of me. I saw, firsthand, its power to heal, align, and uplevel my life. I started posting on TikTok, first about entrepreneurship, then more along my passion for spirituality, manifesting, EFT, and other things I learned firsthand. It blossomed, and it led me down to my current path. I had to release so many of my blocks to self-acceptance, and EFT helped me with that.
What was the moment when you decided to go “all-in”, and how did you use the “no plan plan” to do that?
Haley: I was doing copywriting after quitting my startup. I did all my work as early as possible in the morning because I was so excited to spend the rest of my day recording those TikTok videos. I began directing more of my time to using EFT tapping to heal money beliefs and create a business. I had decided to be a full-time ME and to follow my voice.
How does EFT tapping work?
Haley: I call my specific practice “subconscious breakthrough EFT coaching”. We ask juicy questions around where you’re feeling stuck and where you want to be. Then, we connect those blocks to a memory, rate that memory from 1 to 10 regarding its emotional intensity. Then, we start tapping. The tapping points I use are the front of the eyebrow, the side of the eye, underneath the eye, and down on the collar bone. Then, you squeeze across your wrist, take a deep breath in, and blow it all out. We also use pattern interrupts to get your mind completely off of what we’re tapping on because it thins out the neural pathway and starts to dissolve it, making it less relevant. I have programs called Slingshot Sessions. One is on productivity, another is on money blocks, another on entrepreneurship. You go back to the memory after the pattern interrupt, and the emotional intensity almost always goes down each time. As you release the fear that comes with the memory, you break that autopilot of negativity and allow new, positive thoughts to enter, and you begin to see hope and truth, which is all about the potential you have to overcome wherever you’re stuck. We look at shame and hurt and other emotions that factor into our negative stories in a different light, and we can change our perspective.
How do you find the courage to start creating authentic content regularly?
Haley: Every single time I come up with my best content, whether it’s a new series idea or something that goes viral, I always have this energy of play. It has to start with creating something that’s just for you, something that makes you feel good. Energetically, if you create something just for its own sake, rather than as a means to an end like getting more views, likes, or follows, what you create becomes magnetic. It’s a practice. If you have fun with what you create, people will automatically feel the value of it. On a practical level, try filling a page full of content ideas, even the ones that you think are the stupidest ideas ever. To get into a creative flow, you have to release the need to be perfect. It loosens things up for your brain and gets things going. There’s also something to be said for creating an environment for creativity, such as scheduling in content creation, and in a specific space. Then just let ideas come to you. You learn how to open that connection and it gets a little easier over time. You have to show up and trust your creativity enough to create content as the ideas come, without second-guessing them.
What advice do you have for those who have so many passions and creative gifts and don’t know which one to go with when building their brand?
Haley: I also struggled with choosing between being a singer-songwriter or continuing my work as an EFT and manifestation coach. Then, in the shower one day, I came to the realization that life is seasonal. There are different seasons within the year, but they’re all still a part of the same year. Those are different expressions of the energy that is always available, and there is time and space for all of it. It’s not even about making time for your different passions, but about trusting the seasons, and showing up fully when something is calling out to you. You can do it all, but you have to be open to being guided to what is best for you to do at that moment. You need to trust yourself, because whatever you’re called to at a given moment happens for a reason. Nothing you’re attracted to is random. They are all expressions of your energy. Trust.
