In this episode of Waking Up With Melissa Ruiz, I talk about the importance of discipline and three ways to activate it in your life. Discipline is the virtue that stabilizes and brings safety to your nervous system. It’s the virtue that inspires you with confidence, both in your soul business and in life!

Fear is the edge of expansion
Beyond that edge are limitless possibilities. It’s the place where your highest self resides, just waiting for you to take the plunge. The question is: How do we collect the courage to go over the edge?
Successful people only take risks that they’ve prepared for. They’ve worked at it, in spite of the fear threatening to stop them in their tracks.
Discipline is that factor that we need to constantly practice to keep fear at bay as we inch closer to the edge. It’s what allows us to finally take the leap, to put in the hard work now so that we can enjoy the fruits of the fight!
Take it slow and steady
This same principle applies when running a marathon: Rather than going as fast as you can right out of the gate and burning out, plan on pacing yourself.
We’ve all heard the cliché that “slow and steady wins the race”. In today’s high-paced world (particularly in the world of entrepreneurship), we take this maxim for granted. But it holds true for everyone with a long-term vision in mind.
Instead of overhauling your diet overnight in an attempt to eat healthier, start with replacing one unhealthy food with another over time, or to start with cutting out a single sugary treat per week.
In order to achieve any goal worth fighting for, we need to learn to preserve our focus and energy. We need to make time for rest. We need to prepare our mind and body for those tough times and, when those times come, we must embrace the power of rest and recovery.
By taking things slow and steady, it becomes easier to get into that state of flow that we all desire when striving to become a better version of ourselves!
Set realistic goals
In a similar vein, it’s a bad idea to set too high a goal because you’re likely setting yourself up for failure right from the get-go.
Here’s another well-known yet overlooked maxim: Celebrate the small wins. Set milestones for yourself. The big picture is almost always overwhelming if it’s a worthy goal. Aim for small, bite-sized achievements and focus completely on them, one at a time.
One day, you’ll look up and find yourself closer to the top than you expected, and turn your head around to be amazed at how far you’ve already come!
Have a tight follow-through game
It’s not enough to set a realistic goal. It’s not enough to decide to go slow and steady.
The decision is obviously incredibly important, and just getting started on the journey is something most people already fail to do.
But once you’ve begun to walk your path, there are no guarantees that you’ll make it to the end without consistent follow-through.
This doesn’t mean you can’t pivot or change your mind partway through. In fact, knowing when to change course is a critical part of growth. Trust me: You’ll know when you’re truly misaligned—when what you’re doing is out of sync with your highest quantum self.
However, even when you’ve committed yourself to your target goal, if you’re human, you’re going to hit a wall or two and lose motivation, often at the most inconvenient moments.
This is where having a tight follow-through game comes into play. You will make mistakes. It’s natural. And you will come across distractions, obstacles, and setbacks that you never expected. These are critical junctures where you can choose to give up.
But discipline is achieved when you’re able to combine that decision to go slow and steady, set realistic goals, and follow-through on your commitment until the job is done!
